Portsmouth Athenæum

The Portsmouth Athenæum is a historic independent library, gallery, and museum located in the heart of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Established in 1817, it occupies a Federal style building dating back to 1805 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Athenæum houses over 40,000 volumes and an extensive collection of photographs, artworks, and artifacts, with a strong focus on the region's maritime history. It serves as a cultural hub, offering exhibitions, concerts, and lectures, and welcomes visitors to its Shaw Research Library and Randall Gallery free of charge from Tuesday to Saturday.
