Sallee Hall

Sallee Hall, a unique three-story windowless building at Western Illinois University, was constructed in 1964 to provide essential classroom space during a time of growing enrollment. Initially serving the English and Foreign Language Departments, it sparked discussions about the psychological effects of a windowless environment on students and faculty. Named after Roy Sallee, a notable biology professor, the building has undergone various changes, including the closure of its top floors in the 1980s due to declining enrollment and faculty dissatisfaction. Today, Sallee Hall houses the Communications, Broadcasting, Theater, Dance, and Music departments, continuing to play a vital role in the university's academic landscape despite its controversial design.
