Spirit of Detroit (Coleman A. Young Municipal Center)

The Spirit of Detroit is a bronze sculpture by Marshall Fredericks, installed in 1958 on the exterior of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. The sculpture, an iconic symbol of the city, depicts a seated man holding a gilt bronze sphere and a family group and is frequently used as a focal point for civic celebrations and photographs. The Municipal Center’s plaza and lobby provide public access to view the work.
