State Arsenal (Providence, Rhode Island)

The State Arsenal, also known as the Benefit Street Arsenal, is a historic armory located in Providence, Rhode Island, built in 1843 in the Gothic Revival style by architect James C. Bucklin. Originally serving as the armory for the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery, it played a significant role during the American Civil War and has been associated with various military organizations over the years. The building features battlemented towers and a large drill hall, reflecting its fortified design. It was moved to its current location in 1906 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Today, it houses military artifacts and serves as a headquarters for veterans' associations, making it an interesting site for both tourists and researchers interested in military history.
