National Civil Rights Museum (Lorraine Motel)

The museum occupies the former Lorraine Motel, the site where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968; Room 306 and the motel's balcony are preserved as part of the site. The National Civil Rights Museum opened to the public in 1991 and presents a documented chronology of the American civil rights movement through exhibits and artifacts. The institution is a focal point for education about civil rights history and preservation of the Lorraine Motel building.
