Joel M. Pritchard Building

The Joel M. Pritchard Building, located on the Washington State Capitol campus in Olympia, is a notable example of mid-century modern architecture, designed by Paul Thiry and completed in 1958. Originally housing the Washington State Library, it features local Wilkeson sandstone and is recognized for its significant architectural design, earning Thiry the first American Institute of Architects/American Library Association Library Building Award. The building was named after Joel M. Pritchard, a prominent U.S. Congressman and Lieutenant Governor. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. After the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake, it served various governmental functions, including as the chamber for the Washington State Senate. The building also showcases public art, with pieces from notable artists like Kenneth Callahan and Mark Tobey, enhancing its cultural significance.
