Bowman's Folly

Bowman's Folly is a historic house located near Accomac in Accomack County, Virginia, originally patented by Captain Edmund Bowman in 1664. The current structure, built around 1815 by General John Cropper Jr., features a grand design with a 2+1⁄2-story main block and a 1+1⁄2-story wing, showcasing a Palladian window and a pedimented entrance porch. The property includes additional structures like a frame kitchen and dovecote. The name 'Folly' reflects Bowman's regret over the swampy location, which led to hardships, including the loss of his son. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, making it a notable site for tourists and researchers interested in early American history.
