Mitchell House, Melbourne

Mitchell House is a historic six-storey Streamline Moderne commercial building located at the corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets in Melbourne, Australia. Constructed in 1937 for the Mitchell Brush Company, it showcases the design of architect Harry Norris. Originally intended as a ten-storey structure, it was completed with six levels and features distinctive architectural elements such as steel-framed windows, incised 'speed lines', and ornate Art Deco gates. The building has a rich history, having served various purposes over the decades, including housing the Australian Survey Corps during World War II. It was classified by the National Trust in 1987 and added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 2010, making it a notable landmark for both tourists and researchers interested in Melbourne's architectural and commercial history.
