The stadium at 9449 Friars Rd was long known as Jack Murphy Stadium, named in 1981 for sportswriter Jack Murphy who advocated for a larger municipal stadium in San Diego. The venue, originally opened as San Diego Stadium in 1967 and later known as Qualcomm Stadium, hosted numerous professional football and baseball games, as well as major events, and its name commemorated Murphy's influence on San Diego sports infrastructure.
