Waterloo House

Waterloo House, located in Black River, Jamaica, is a historic building that was the first private residence in Jamaica to be illuminated by electricity. Constructed in 1819 and named after the Battle of Waterloo, it was originally owned by John William Leydon, whose sons installed the electricity. The house transitioned to a guest house in 1972 after being purchased by Ferdinand Stewart in 1938. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, marking the end of its storied legacy.
