Exchange Buildings (1803–08; demolished 1864)

The Exchange Buildings in Liverpool, constructed between 1803 and 1808, were a grand classical office structure designed by John Foster Sr., possibly in collaboration with James Wyatt. This impressive building, celebrated for its architectural beauty, served as a hub for the cotton trade, with its courtyard facing the Liverpool Town Hall and featuring the Nelson Monument. The building was notable for its rusticated basement, Corinthian columns, and a magnificent news room adorned with sixteen columns of single stone. Despite its demolition in 1864, the Exchange Buildings remain a significant part of Liverpool's commercial history, reflecting the city's prominence in global trade during the 19th century.
