Eastern State Penitentiary: Haunted history

Opened in 1829 and designed by John Haviland, Eastern State Penitentiary pioneered the separate system of solitary confinement. The castle-like prison later fell into ruin and is now a National Historic Landmark offering daytime tours and the seasonal haunted attraction 'Terror Behind the Walls.' Visitors and staff have reported anecdotal accounts of unexplained sounds and sightings in the cellblocks, but claims of paranormal activity are not scientifically verified.
