Torstenson Palace

The Torstenson Palace, located on Södra Hamngatan in Gothenburg, is a historic building originally constructed between 1648 and 1650 for Count Lennart Torstenson. Known as Kungshuset ('the King's House'), it served as the residence for Swedish kings, including Karl X Gustav and Karl XI, during their stays in Gothenburg. The palace has been the seat of the landshövding of Västra Götaland County since 1998 and is recognized as Gothenburg's oldest residential building, listed as a byggnadsminne since 1935. Notable for hosting the 2001 European Council meeting, the palace has undergone several renovations, including significant expansions in 1875 and restorations in the early 2000s.
