Culcheth Laboratories

Culcheth Laboratories, located in Warrington, Cheshire, was a prominent British metallurgical and nuclear research institute established in 1950. It played a crucial role in the development of nuclear reactors, focusing on the structural design of reactor pressure vessels and materials for both civil and military applications. Notably, it was the first facility to incorporate niobium in fast breeder reactors. The laboratory collaborated with prestigious institutions like the University of Manchester and the University of Cambridge, conducting advanced research in fracture mechanics and nuclear reactor physics. Although it ceased operations in 1995, its contributions to nuclear energy research remain significant.
