Barracks Arch

The Barracks Arch, located at the corner of Malcolm and Elder Streets in Perth, Western Australia, is a historic remnant of a former government barracks built between 1863 and 1866. Designed by architect Richard Roach Jewell in a Tudor style, the structure originally housed the Enrolled Pensioner Force, who served as guards on convict ships. The building features distinctive brickwork and timber shingles, and despite a significant fire in 1887, it was restored and later converted into offices for the Public Works Department. In the 1960s, plans to demolish the Barracks to make way for the Mitchell Freeway sparked public outcry, leading to a successful campaign to preserve the iconic arch. Today, the Barracks Arch stands as a symbol of heritage conservation efforts in Perth, surrounded by landscaped grounds, and offers a glimpse into the city's colonial past.
