Oxford House (settlement)

Oxford House, located in Bethnal Green, East London, was established in 1884 as one of the first settlements by Oxford University, aiming to provide a religious and charitable hub for the local community. Originally set up in a parish school, it evolved into a significant cultural center, offering various programs such as clubs for boys and working men, and Bible lectures. The building, designed by architect Sir Arthur Blomfield, was opened in 1892 and is now a Grade II listed structure. Throughout its history, Oxford House has adapted to the needs of the community, especially during challenging times like the World Wars, providing shelter and support. It has hosted notable figures, including Mahatma Gandhi, and continues to serve as a vital resource for local residents, promoting social integration and community welfare.
