Fisk University and Jubilee Hall

Fisk University was founded in 1866 and is the home of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, an ensemble formed in 1871 that toured nationally and internationally to raise funds and popularize African American spirituals. Jubilee Hall on the Fisk campus, completed in 1876, is one of the earliest surviving institutional buildings constructed for the education of African Americans after the Civil War and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Scholars, singers, and visitors often make dedicated trips to Fisk to study its musical legacy and view the historic hall and related archives. The university continues to present programs and performances tied to the Jubilee Singers' history.
