Oglethorpe Barracks

Oglethorpe Barracks, established in the 19th century in Savannah, Georgia, served as a military post named after James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia colony. Originally built in response to a petition by the city in 1824, the barracks were completed around 1834 and played a significant role during the Civil War, housing Confederate troops until Savannah was captured in 1864. After the war, the barracks continued to be occupied by U.S. Army troops until their decommissioning in 1879. The site was later transformed into the Desoto Hotel, which opened in 1890 and features historical elements like a lion fountain. Today, the location is part of the historic district of Savannah, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's military past and architectural heritage.
