Smithsonian’s National Zoo - Smithsonian-run and free since 1889

The Smithsonian National Zoological Park, commonly called the National Zoo, was established in 1889 and is one of the United States’ oldest zoos. It is the only zoo administered by the Smithsonian Institution and offers free admission to visitors. The zoo is known for long-term conservation programs and for popular exhibits such as the giant panda program (historically) and expansive habitats for mammals, birds, and reptiles. Its combination of Smithsonian research, public education, and free access makes it a singular public zoological institution in the country.
