Commissioned by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune, the Winchester Mystery House was under active construction from 1884 until her death in 1922, producing a 24,000-square-foot, roughly 160-room mansion. The house is noted for its labyrinthine floor plan and numerous architectural oddities, including staircases that terminate at ceilings and doors that open onto walls or drops. It is a registered California Historical Landmark and operates as a museum documenting the property and its unusual construction history.
