Emancipation Park and Juneteenth heritage

Emancipation Park was purchased in 1872 by formerly enslaved Black residents of Houston to commemorate Juneteenth and has long been a focal point for Juneteenth celebrations in the city. It is one of Houston's oldest public parks and serves as a cultural and community hub for the Third Ward. The park underwent a major renovation completed in 2017 that added new cultural, recreational, and community facilities.
