George R. Brown Convention Center used as a major Hurricane Harvey shelter

During Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 the George R. Brown Convention Center served as a primary intake shelter and relief staging area, receiving thousands of evacuees, volunteers, and donated supplies. The facility was used by the City of Houston and multiple relief organizations for sheltering, medical triage, and volunteer coordination during the catastrophic flooding. Its role became a central part of Houston’s emergency response to the storm.
