Central Canal and the Indiana State Museum (historic canal infrastructure)

The Central Canal in Indianapolis was begun in the 1830s as part of state canal projects; remnants of the 19th-century canal bed run through what is now White River State Park. The Canal Walk and canal sections adjacent to the Indiana State Museum expose and follow portions of the historic canal alignment, and some early canal-related structures and masonry remain visible along the route. The canal's presence and later restoration illustrate 19th-century transportation infrastructure adapted into modern urban park and cultural uses.
