McClurg Building (Chicago, Illinois)

The McClurg Building is a historic office skyscraper located in the Loop area of Chicago, Illinois. Completed in 1899 and designed by the renowned Chicago school architects Holabird & Roche, this nine-story structure is one of the city's smallest skyscrapers. Its distinctive Wabash Street facade features an impressive 9,000 square feet of windows framed by terra cotta, a design choice made necessary by the lack of windows on the building's sides. Originally named after the A.C. McClurg publishing company, which was its primary tenant, the building has been recognized for its historical significance and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Today, it houses various tenants, including the Exchequer Restaurant and Pub, Roosevelt University's Dance Studios, and the Chicago Youth Centers, making it a vibrant part of the city's cultural and business landscape.
