Institute for Colored Youth

Founded in 1837 in Philadelphia, the Institute for Colored Youth was the first college for African-Americans in the United States, established by Quaker philanthropist Richard Humphreys. It aimed to provide education and training for African-American children, focusing on teaching and various trades. The Institute moved to a new facility in 1866 and later relocated to Cheyney, Pennsylvania, becoming Cheyney University. The original building, known as the Samuel J. Randall School, is now a historic site and has been repurposed into condominiums. Notable alumni include influential educators, artists, and professionals who contributed significantly to their fields.
