Fort Negley, a tucked-away Civil War fortification

Fort Negley, located within Fort Negley Park, is the largest inland fortification constructed in the South during the American Civil War and was built by Union forces using a large workforce that included formerly enslaved people and conscripted labor. The stone and earthwork remains have been partially restored and sit within an urban park setting that can be easy to miss from surrounding roads. The site's historic significance is documented by the park's trails and interpretive signage but it remains less prominent than other Nashville landmarks.
