Tammany Hall - headquarters of the Democratic political machine

The Tammany Hall organization was headquartered at the building on Union Square East and dominated New York City Democratic politics throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. William M. "Boss" Tweed and other Tammany leaders used the organization's patronage networks to exercise political control, and Tweed's corruption was exposed in the 1870s leading to his arrest and conviction. The Tammany name remains prominent in local lore about machine politics and urban corruption in New York City.
