Comarques, Thorpe-le-Soken

Comarques is an 18th-century country house located in Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, attributed to architect Sir Robert Taylor. Originally owned by Captain Comarque, a Huguenot refugee, the house showcases the Queen Anne architectural style and features distinctive Chinese Chippendale windows. Notable residents include the author Arnold Bennett, who lived there from 1913 to 1921, and there are local traditions linking it to former Prime Minister Clement Attlee, although this claim is disputed. The house is a Grade II* listed building and reflects the rich history and architectural heritage of the region.
