Solitude (Blacksburg, Virginia)

Solitude is a historic house located on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, dating back to around 1802. It features a unique blend of log and frame construction with Greek Revival modifications from the mid-19th century. Originally part of a 250-acre farm, it has served various roles, including a college infirmary and faculty housing, and was a clubhouse for WWII veterans. The property includes the Fraction Family House, which honors the enslaved population that once lived there. After a significant restoration in 2010, Solitude now houses academic programs and the Henry H. Wiss Center for Theory and History of Art and Architecture. It is recognized on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in American history and architecture.
