Walden Abbey

Walden Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery located in Saffron Walden, Essex, was founded in the 12th century by Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex. Initially a priory, it became an abbey in 1190. The abbey has a rich history marked by political turmoil, including the rebellion of its founder against King Stephen and subsequent struggles for patronage. Notable burials at the abbey include several earls and countesses, reflecting its significance in English nobility. After its dissolution in the 16th century, the site was transformed into Audley End House, a Jacobean mansion, making it a point of interest for tourists and researchers alike.
