Marina District built from 1915 exposition fill, including 1906 rubble claim

It is commonly said that the Marina District was built from rubble hauled in after the 1906 earthquake; historical records show the land for the 1915 Panama‑Pacific International Exposition was created by extensive landfill that included material from various sources, including some demolition debris from earlier projects. That fill contributed to the neighborhood’s susceptibility to liquefaction and damage during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The area around Fort Mason and the Marina was substantially regraded and filled in the early 20th century rather than being natural solid ground.
