Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (Spirit of Detroit)

The Coleman A. Young Municipal Center houses Detroit's city government and is the site of Marshall Fredericks' Spirit of Detroit sculpture mounted above its main entrance. The building opened as the City-County Building in 1954 and was renamed in 1994 for Detroit's first elected African American mayor, Coleman A. Young. The Spirit of Detroit, dedicated in 1958, has become an iconic civic symbol often featured in city celebrations and sports rituals.
