Scuffle Hill

Scuffle Hill is a historic mansion located in Martinsville, Virginia, built between 1917 and 1920 on the site of an earlier house that was destroyed by fire. This two-story brick structure features a Colonial Revival style with a Doric portico and polygonal window bays. Originally constructed by tobacco magnate Col. Pannill Rucker, it has served various roles, including as a parish house for Christ Episcopal Church. The name 'Scuffle Hill' pays homage to Revolutionary War hero General Joseph Martin's first plantation, reflecting his struggles to acquire the land. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, it is situated within the East Church Street-Starling Avenue Historic District, making it a notable site for both tourists and researchers interested in Virginia's rich history.
