Smith-Thaxter-Merrifield House

The Smith-Thaxter-Merrifield House, located at 158 Holden Street in Worcester, Massachusetts, is one of the city's oldest homes, built around 1741. This historic two-story timber-frame house features a unique hip roof and a massive central chimney, showcasing minimal alterations over the centuries. Originally constructed by Elisha Smith II, the house has seen ownership changes, including an enlargement by Benjamin Thaxter in the late 18th century. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and has served as a child care facility since 1946. The house represents a rare architectural style typical of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Worcester, with only three similar houses remaining in the area.
