Market House (Providence, Rhode Island)

The Market House is a historic three-story brick structure located in Market Square, Providence, Rhode Island, built between 1773 and 1775 by architects Joseph Brown and Stephen Hopkins. Originally serving as a market on the ground floor and a meeting space above, it became a hub of civic life, notably hosting gatherings against British taxation during the American Revolution. The building features distinctive architecture, including large round arches and a clock added in the 20th century. It housed the Providence City Council until the completion of City Hall in 1878 and has since served various tenants. The Market House was restored to its 1833 appearance and is now part of the Rhode Island School of Design, recognized as a historic site on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972.
