Philadelphia Zoo

The Philadelphia Zoo, chartered in 1859 and opened in 1874, is often cited as the United States' first true zoo. The zoo's early development introduced planned exhibits and animal-care practices that influenced later zoological parks, and it continues to operate on a historic campus with historic structures alongside modern exhibits. It is located on a landscaped site along the Schuylkill River and remains an active conservation and education institution.
