Log Chapel (University of Notre Dame)

The Log Chapel, built in 1831 by Rev. Fr. Stephen Badin, is one of the earliest Catholic worship sites in Northern Indiana and served as a mission to the Potawatomi Indians. It became the heart of the University of Notre Dame when Fr. Edward Sorin took over in 1842. Originally a log cabin, it housed both a chapel and residence, evolving over time to accommodate the growing community. Although the original structure was lost to fire in 1856, a replica was constructed in 1906. The chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and is notable for the relocation of several priests' burials to its site in 1987, enhancing its historical significance for visitors and researchers alike.
