Berkeley House, York, Upper Canada

Berkeley House was a significant historical residence in York, Upper Canada, serving as the home of influential figures John Small and his son Charles Coxwell Small, both Clerks of Upper Canada's Privy Council. Originally a log cabin built in 1793, John Small purchased and expanded it in 1795, later transforming it into an Italianate villa under his son's stewardship. The house became a social hub in the 1820s, hosting important meetings of the province's executive committee. Although demolished in 1925, its legacy is captured in historical accounts, including those of Henry Scadding, who detailed its evolution and significance in early Toronto's development. Today, the site is occupied by the Globe and Mail Centre.
