The Matrix nightclub and early San Francisco rock

The Matrix opened in December 1965 at 3138 Fillmore Street and became a focal point for the emerging San Francisco rock scene. The club hosted early performances by Jefferson Airplane and appearances by Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin during 1965–1966. The Matrix is frequently cited in histories of the city's mid-1960s music community for launching several local acts.
