Winder Building

The Winder Building, located at 604 17th Street, Northwest, Washington, D.C., is a historic office building just west of the White House. Designed by Richard A. Gilpin, it was originally built for W. H. Winder, a relative of General William H. Winder. Purchased by the government in 1854, the building has undergone various changes, including a transformation from stucco to painted brick. It has served multiple government functions, including housing the Office of the United States Trade Representative since 1981. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, ensuring its preservation amidst threats of demolition in the 1970s.
