Fairmount Water Works - early major municipal waterworks in the U.S.

The Fairmount Water Works, constructed beginning in 1812 along the Schuylkill River, was among the nation’s first large municipal waterworks and supplied treated river water to Philadelphia’s residents. Its combination of Greek Revival architecture and early steam‑powered pumping technology made the complex both an engineering milestone and a 19th‑century public attraction. The site is part of Fairmount Park and is interpreted for its historical significance in urban water supply and public health.
