South Station headhouse (Beaux-Arts railroad terminal)

South Station's headhouse was completed in 1899 and designed by the firm Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge in a Beaux-Arts/classical style, executed in granite and brick. It was built as the principal railroad terminal for Boston and continues to function as the city’s major intercity and commuter rail station. The terminal complex and its façade are prominent examples of turn-of-the-century railroad architecture in New England.
