George and Pelican Inn

The George and Pelican Inn, an iconic English coaching inn located in Speenhamland, Newbury, served as a vital stop for travelers between London and Bath for over 200 years until 1847. Originally two separate inns, it became renowned for its food, entertainment, and accommodation. The inn is notable for its Grade II listed building status since 1950 and has hosted famous visitors, including King George III in 1784 and political figure William Cobbett in 1822, who addressed a large crowd there. Today, it stands as a historical landmark along the historic A4 route.
