Dumbarton Oaks - Site of 1944 International Conference and Historic Gardens

Dumbarton Oaks is a historic estate in Georgetown whose gardens were designed by landscape architect Beatrix Farrand in the 1920s. In 1944 the estate hosted the Dumbarton Oaks Conference, where representatives of the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and China developed proposals that contributed to the founding structure of the United Nations. The estate buildings and gardens were donated to Harvard University in 1940 and the site is designated a National Historic Landmark.
