Powel House (Samuel Powel’s Georgian townhouse)

The Powel House is an 18th-century Georgian townhouse built around 1765 and was the residence of Samuel Powel, Philadelphia’s last colonial mayor and first post-Revolution mayor of the city. The house is noted for its high-style Georgian interior woodwork, decorative plaster, and period furnishings that illustrate elite urban domestic architecture of the era. It has been preserved and operates as a historic house museum interpreting Philadelphia’s colonial and early national domestic life. The building is an example of fashionable private architecture from Philadelphia’s late colonial period.
