The Oaks (Winnsboro, South Carolina)

The Oaks is a historic plantation house built in 1835 near Winnsboro, South Carolina. This two-story residence features a striking front façade with a central portico supported by wooden columns. Originally owned by Richard Hallum, the property later belonged to John Montgomery Lemmon, a planter who owned 19 slaves and had a plantation valued at $10,000 in 1860. The area was significant for its cotton cultivation, particularly after the invention of the cotton gin. Recognized for its historical importance, The Oaks was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, making it a notable site for tourists and researchers interested in antebellum architecture and Southern history.
