Pacific Telephone Building (Pacific Bell headquarters and switching center)

The Pacific Telephone Building at 140 New Montgomery Street opened in 1925 as the headquarters and a major switching center for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company. For much of the 20th century it housed large electromechanical switching equipment and administrative offices that managed telephone service for San Francisco. The building stands as a documented example of early large-scale urban telecommunications infrastructure in the city.
