Grand Central Tower

Grand Central Tower, also known as 175 Park Avenue, was a proposed skyscraper in New York City that aimed to be built atop the iconic Grand Central Terminal. Initially proposed in the 1950s due to financial struggles of the terminal's owner, the New York Central Railroad, two competing designs emerged, one by renowned architect I. M. Pei. Despite ambitious plans for a towering structure that could have become the world's tallest building, public opposition, particularly from notable figures like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, led to the rejection of these proposals. The terminal, a designated city landmark completed in 1913, ultimately remained intact, with legal battles affirming its preservation. This history highlights the tension between urban development and historical preservation in one of the world's most famous transit hubs.
