Philadelphia City Hall's masonry mass and height

Philadelphia City Hall was constructed between 1871 and 1901 and is topped by a statue of William Penn. At 548 feet to the top of the statue it was the tallest habitable building in the world on completion and is widely cited as the largest free‑standing masonry building because it was built without a structural steel frame. The building contains more than 700,000 square feet of interior space and remains one of the largest municipal buildings in the United States.
