Collect Pond (filled and built over)

The Collect Pond was a freshwater pond in lower Manhattan that was progressively filled in beginning in the early 19th century after pollution made it unusable. The filled site became unstable and was developed into the notorious Five Points neighborhood before later 19th-century clearance and civic construction. The area that once held the pond is now occupied by Foley Square and nearby government buildings.
